Italy’s CGIL Calls Nationwide Strikes and Demonstrations on September 19, 2025, to Protest Gaza Crisis

The Italian trade union CGIL has announced a national day of mobilization on Friday, September 19, 2025, including strikes and demonstrations across Italy in response to the ongoing crisis in Gaza City.

CGIL’s national categories will hold at least two-hour strikes at the end of shifts in sectors not covered by Law 146/90, with assemblies organized in those sectors. Regional and territorial confederations will coordinate open demonstrations inviting all supporters of the initiative.

The union demands an immediate halt to military interventions in Gaza, the establishment of humanitarian corridors, protection of civilians, and security for humanitarian missions, including the Global Sumud Flotilla. CGIL also calls for suspension of all commercial and military cooperation agreements with Israel until the war in Gaza and occupation of the West Bank cease.

Further, CGIL urges the removal of the humanitarian embargo and recognition of the State of Palestine, advocating for international governments and institutions to work towards a UN-led peace conference.

CGIL General Secretary Maurizio Landini will participate in the Catania march, with other national secretariat members attending demonstrations in Rome, Reggio Emilia, and Potenza.

Various CGIL sectors have announced specific strike durations and activities, including four-hour strikes in metalworking, construction, transport, agroindustry, and public services, with symbolic acts of mourning and workplace assemblies planned.
